End-of-life care is a deeply personal and universal journey that deserves compassion, dignity, and understanding. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and those who care for them, Tangram and Morning Light have partnered to launch a groundbreaking educational initiative. This program is designed to empower support staff with the skills and resources needed to provide comprehensive, compassionate care during life’s final stages.
About the Initiative
The collaboration between Tangram and Morning Light brings together decades of experience in disability support and hospice care. This initiative focuses on addressing a critical need: equipping caregivers with the tools to navigate the complexities of aging, hospice, and palliative care for individuals with disabilities. Through a specialized training program, caregivers will gain insights into various aspects of end-of-life care, including:
- Physical and Emotional Support: Techniques to ensure comfort and dignity for individuals receiving care.
- Legal and Ethical Considerations: Guidance on patient rights, advance directives, and ethical decision-making.
- Cultural and Societal Perspectives: Understanding varied grief and mourning practices to provide appropriate care.
- Grief and Spiritual Resources: Tools to support both caregivers and families through loss.
The Task Force Behind the Initiative
This initiative is driven by a dedicated task force comprising hospice professionals, disability specialists, curriculum developers, and community leaders. The team includes hospice RNs, a certified disability nurse, an end-of-life doula, DEIB experts, and a chaplain. Together, they aim to create a welcoming training curriculum that reflects the varied needs of those at the end of life and the caregivers who support them.
Why It Matters
As life expectancy for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities continues to rise, so does the need for tailored end-of-life care. With nearly 1 in 4 Americans living with a disability, ensuring that this population experiences their final journey with dignity is a pressing societal responsibility. By providing this training, Tangram and Morning Light hope to foster a compassionate community where every individual can face the end of life with respect and care.
